The main purpose of this study was to provide basic data for set up a proper nursing intervention program for reducing burdens in mothers with asthmatic children. The research question for this study was `what are the burdens of mothers with asthmatic children?´ .
The design of this study was a phenomenological study to identify the experiences of the burdens in mothers with asthmatic children. The data were collected from January 9, 1998 to April 30, 1998 at the pediatric out patient department of a university hospital located in Suwon city. The sample consisted of 21 mothers with asthmatic children. The contents of mothers´ burdens were collected through in-depth interviews and observations.
The results of this study were summarized as follows; The data on the burden contents were five categorized as psychological, physiological, social, financial and dependent burden. The psychological burdens were feelings of guilty, sorry, resentment, worry, despair, tiresome and collapse. The physiological burdens were insomnia, common cold, fatigue and lethargy. The social burdens were husbands´ lack of concern, conflicts between family members and limited social activities. The financial burdens were medical fee and jobless. The dependent burdens were loss of self-confidence and separation anxiety.
